The workshop generated a variety of unique printed images.Exploring methods of printing using simple technologies. The artists introduced the children to a new technique which enables the creation of many original images from a simple motif or template.
The workshop was also a networking opportunity for both the artists and Greatmore’s outreach programme in the outlying communities.
The children were brought into direct contact with both professional artists’ practices and art teaching (to which they do not have regular access).
Zonnebloem Childrens’ Arts Centre

In addition, the experience of visiting the Greatmore Studios and meeting practising artists in their workspaces, seeing their work in progress, was considered to be of great value.
Most of all, having the relative luxury of a 3 hour workshop as compared with the usual school scheduled intensive one hour art session at Zonnebloem Children’s Art Centre, alongside children from other local schools gave them a chance to relax into a creative rhythm.
The lack of structure to the workshop challenged their usual way of creating in a highly pre-prepared class; this at first produced a number straightforward repetitions of the work as seen in the demonstration; only after the first 45 minutes or so did they relax enough to venture off the assumed predetermined track and begin to rapidly and enthusiastically generate many new images.
At the close of the session the children visited all the studios open to them. This seemed to give them great pleasure and stimulated many questions about the work on show.
Andy Williams/Canada

Demonstrated in a collaborative effort using graffiti improvisation, film, music and audience participation.
Participants experienced a real time graffiti art demonstration while Andy uses V.Jing techniques to manipulate imagery in synchronization to music. Participants also had the opportunity to experiment with V.J. software under the guidance of Andy.

Velile Soha / South Africa

The workshop was intended as an introduction to various printing methods (namely, moon-print, lino-cut and potato print) for children of various ages. The focus of the workshop was to create imagery for the minibus recently donated to Greatmore, although participants were encouraged to feely produce images of their choosing, both from imagination and inspired by a range of magazines provided (including National Geographic, Vogue).
Greatmore artist and printmaker Velile Soha introduced himself and showed his printmaking work in his studio, to give a sense of the range of possibilities that can be achieved within the discipline. He then went on to demonstrate mono-printing and potato printing to the participants, with an emphasis on how quickly results can be realised using these methods. Following this all facilitators aided the participants in producing simple prints according to the techniques demonstrated, helping them to incorporate magazine imagery into their print, using simple stencilling, mixing ink to a desired colour, and making as successful print to paper.
At a later stage some older participants were also introduced to the more time-consuming and skilled method of lino-cutting, and several successful prints were produced.
The workshop achieved the goal of introducing a group of school children to a range of simple printmaking techniques and to give them some idea of the possibilities of the medium. It was important to encourage the participants to engage directly with the processes as quickly as possible, and to work together as well as with the facilitators to produce images. The imagery produced in the workshop will be reviewed and selected and elements will be used ti create a final design for the exterior of the Greatmore minibus.
Sheena Rose / Barbados

A young Contemporary Caribbean artist with international aspirations, Sheena received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Barbados Community College in 2008. She is known for her hand-drawn animations and has exhibited in the Caribbean, USA and her work is used as a research piece in INIVA Library in London.
I conducted my outreach project at Ruth Prowse School of Arts located in Woodstock near Great more Studios. Wendy Morrison, the tutor at the art school told her students about my outreach project. I decided to have a presentation which would be about my work and contemporary Caribbean art and culture. I realized that during my stay in Cape Town, that many people did not know anything about the Caribbean. Most persons that I met thought that Jamaica was the entire Caribbean. I wanted the students to be aware about the Caribbean art and how I can from a small island called Barbados and I exhibited my work internationally.
In the presentation, I also demonstrated on how I produce my animation. I used a light box and the idea of having fun with your art. There were six students who attended the presentation, the age range were between 21-30 years old.

January - March 2010 Visiting Artists Outreach Project
Rebecca and Katy Beinart as well as Eveline van de Griend Greatmores current visiting artists where enthusiastically received at the newly formed Tiervlei Cultural Development Organization for the outreach project which took place on the 16th and 17th of February.
Young people and senior citizens collaborated in tracing the changes that have taken place from the past to the present.
Eveline van de Griend created an assisgnment for 10 school children between the ages of 13 and 18 incorporating the theme of identity. The participants where asked to portray a person who inspired them or who they admired. The influence of colour was discusse. Each artist was told to pick a colour from the national flag including black and white to create a base for the painting. The following day the artworks were completed using more colours and the children were encouraged to talk about the effect a coloured base had on their painting. The result was amazing the kids were absolutely dedicated and I am sure it will not stay to this time only, there are some great talented kids there and I had a wonderfull time giving them this first introduction in what painting can be or mean to them.
