"Essentially the artists time at Greatmore is about them and their work. It is a great privilege as an artist to have a studio space to work in, to develop one's thoughts and practices without distraction. The Thupelo approach is to teach by example. There is no routine, time table, end result, competition or curriculum to follow or refer to. There are no teachers or students.

"I am exploring the ritual that is said to mark the transition of a boy to a man, particularly focusing on the ceremonial aspect of circumcision rites. I am interrogating the many layers that make up initiation. Despite a fierce belief that circumcision is purely an African traditional, I am intrigues how the initiate's clothing shows a strong assimilation of western culture. I find this problematic. Circumcision has become more about fashion and style now...

I'm a storyteller/author and editor. My themes explore concepts around my background, my growing experience, township life and the life of mine workers. Multitudes of African men with different languages, customs and religions now work on the mines leaving behind their families and children as orphans. My works express sensitive emotions and my strong feelings that I experience along the way

"I am trying to express a sense of a limitless life one with no boundaries-at the same time my figures also converge at a particular point depicting a sense of focus in life. I am having a lot of fun with the piece I am currently working on…as I work on the image it begins to speak to my heart in turn-there is a kind of dialogue going on.

Stylistically, I am a realistic painter and aim to capture the spirit of place and the culture of togetherness within an African landscape. I would love to teach the African child about visual arts.”

"I am using rose clay to explore notions of fertility. I am trying to capture the spirit of the thokolosi that in our rural homes is appeased to help get rid of spiritual aliments/problems in the home. It is a very personal journey I am exploring. I dream a lot about dogs and as you know in African custom when you dream about dogs it is a sign that the ancestors are visiting you. I see art as a calling. I have enrolled in the mentoring workshop to better equip myself with the business side of the arts.”"

Velaphi Masondo , 0726387938, from JHB.
"I am using my work to celebrate boys and girls who have merged from initiation schools. I like to incorporate the horn, traditional African beer in my imagery as it has direct links with communicating with ancestors. I believe that initiation schools help to teach individuals how to be responsible individuals in society. I studied at Funda Centre in Soweto."

" I am currently working on the theme of migrant workers, I have been exploring this theme for the past two years. The theme is personal because my father was from Mozambique and arrived in South Africa as a tailor. I am interested in the elementary tools these workers have in their interior spaces -the iron, the prima stove they work to survive. I had formal training at Funda Centre in Soweto for 3 years."

MOLO LOMO

MENTEES - S.A.
Janet Botes, Nicholas Coutts, Tess Dmitrovsky, Siyabulela Gxekwa, Ali Jacobs, Alex Mamacos, Motsamai Moloi, Esti Strydom

We are 8 individuals given the opportunity to experience and explore Lomography during a three-week introductory mentoring workshop.  We will be presenting our work to give but a glimpse of what we gained, at Greatmore Studios, Greatmore Street in Woodstock, on 23 April 2009 at 17h30, after which the work can be viewed at the studios for the next week.

The 8 individual are from very diverse backgrounds and have different interests related to creative work and personal expression. They are: Janet Botes, Nicholas Coutts, Tess Dmitrovsky, Siyabulela Gxekwa, Ali Jacobs, Alex Mamacos, Motsamai Moloi, Esti Strydom.

This exhibition is a great example of what Greatmore studios has to offer in terms of mentored workshops and aiding young artists in the production of art-making. It also leaves an exciting tangible result of the financial support received from generous sponsors.

The workshop, and the experience that they had during the three weeks created an interactive space where each of these upcoming creatives showed their individual worlds through the art of Lomography.
