It is with deepest regret that we have to announce the sudden death of Madi Phala aged 52, an artist resident at Greatmore Studios for the past 3 years, “a designer, educator and original herd boy”* on 2nd March 2007. Greatmore Studios remember Madi with great affection; a man whose buoyant gait and vibrant coloured shirts could brighten any day, Madi made a serious and passionate contribution to art making in this city. We all enjoyed his professionalism, his courage to step beyond the box in his work, his company and his devotion to pass on his expertise to a new generation of younger artists. Madi has in the last two years been one of our greatest spokespersons at open studio exhibitions held at Greatmore Studios and the energy and laughter he brought into these gatherings is so much appreciated. He had a fine mind and we will all miss him. It was a privilege to have known him.
