ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND CONTINENTS

2012April_Remix2

LET’S DANCE

For three days this March (20th-22nd) Greatmore was transformed into a stage and pulsing with movement as dancers from the acclaimed Remix Dance Company wowed crowds, stirred debate and conversation. The daily performances were followed by snacks, wine and lively discussion about the pieces, creation and perceptions, giving practising artists and the general public a platform for exposure and critical engagement across disciplines.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

This February we teamed up with Doclove, a collective of filmmakers and film enthusiasts, to bring you monthly screenings of documentary, art and feature films. We kicked off our partnership with Mama Goema, a film by former Greatmore Studios visiting artist Angela Ramirez and her co-directors Sara Gouveia and Calum MacNaughton. Presenting the public with the opportunity to interact with filmmakers, networking with peers and enjoying great film at no cost, Doclove is an exciting addition to the Greatmore calendar. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates and join us for screenings and discussions.

BARCELONA, MEET WOODSTOCK
WOODSTOCK, MEET BARCELONA

No one expected the visit to Spain in November last year to bear fruits quite so soon. Thanks to the incredible support from Casa Africa (Ricardo, Blanca and team), Greatmore is now launching an exchange programme with Hangar in Barcelona. Like Greatmore, Hangar is a space for production and creation, offering 3-month residency programmes with various centres across the world and now for the first time in Africa. Greatmore resident artist Conor Ralphs has been selected to live and work in Barcelona until the end of June. We will in turn welcome an artist from Spain from September to November. Congratulations Conor and thank you to Casa Africa and Joana and Marta at Hangar for making this happen.

Thank you also to Pablo Benavides, the Ambassador of Spain, for the continued efforts in building connections and on-going relationships between Spain and Greatmore Studios. Pablo will be leaving his post in South Africa and we were very honoured to host his farewell at Greatmore Studios on the 23rd of March. We wish him the best of luck for his future ventures.

TIME'S ALMOST UP

When I took over as director from Kate in August last year, it was to bridge a gap until a permanent replacement was appointed. What was meant to be for three to four months turned into a year - an amazing year: Revamp. Construct. Expand. Enjoy.

My time as director will be up in August and Greatmore will be calling out for applications in the days to come.

It is impossible not to fall in love with Greatmore and the people that make it: the artists – the ones who live and lived here and the ones passing through, the growing community of aficionados, supporters and broad-minded collaborators and the most beautiful team of staff. So, it is with a degree of separation Angst that I vacate my post but more importantly with a truckload of awesome experiences, an encyclopaedia of lessons learnt and heaps of gratitude. Greatmore occupies a truly unique space in South Africa and beyond and it feels great to be part of that.

A SALUTE TO THE POSTMAN

When asked how he and Anthony Caro started the Triangle Network 30 years ago and kept it running since then, Robert Loder has often referred to himself as merely a postman, someone who passes on the messages and connects people. A humble answer by a man with big dreams – one of which was Greatmore Studios. Having been involved from the very beginning, Robert has felt for a while that it was time to make space for the next generation of trustees and officially resigned from the Greatmore Studios’ Board this March.

We thank you Robert for the countless and invaluable contributions to Greatmore over the years and will hold you to your promise to come visit just as often in the future.

Velile ndikhumbule_1

A SPACE FOR THE GREATS

After thirteen years as resident artist at Greatmore Studios, veteran printmaker Velile Soha is now running his very own print-making studio in Guga S’thebe in Langa where he will be teaching and working with the youth of the area. Velile will be missed but we hope that his move will facilitate interesting collaborations between the two centres in the future.

Studio 11 in Woodstock is taken over by no stranger: Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi is back at Greatmore and arrived ready to unpack for his exhibition “In Living Colours” (together with Lonwabo Kilani) at the Barnard Gallery in Newlands on the 14th of March. Not surprisingly, none of the works returned to his studio. Sold out!  Congratulations Ndikhumbule and great to have you back.

RED STICKER NIGHT WITH SARAH CAMPBELL

This past February Greatmore Studios hosted an exhibition of friend and long time supporter Sarah Campbell. The opening speech by Estelle Jacobs painted a picture of an artist dedicated to her work and community. The impressive turn out also echoed Estelle’s words as many in attendance attest that Sarah had in some way contributed to their individual successes along the way. Works both from the very early days of her career to her present day abstracts flew off the walls the moment the show opened. Thank you Sarah Campbell, Jill Trappler, Estelle Jacobs and Theresa Campbell for your tireless efforts in making this show the success it became.
