Tambu had a chat with Dean Arlen, an artist from Trinidad who exhibited
his work at Chutney Jam Exhibition.
Cape Town is a melange of people.
Who have you met since your arrival to the city?
Since arriving in Cape Town and navigating
through its spaces, I have had the opportunity to have rich dialogues
with the street boys, the academic, the intellectual, the businessman,
the coloured, the African, the student, the Afrikaner…I feel I have
met her people.
It has been said that The Cape
is a space/place of ‘chaos, character, colour and creolisation”.
What has been your experience and how has it informed your work?
Walking these streets I felt connected
to the graffiti on the walls, and one can see these influences in my work,
which I have entitled ‘Urban Scrawls or Markings. My work is spontaneous
and now. It is honest and real. It concerns itself with many things…murder,
township life, issues surrounding water, land displacement, elections,
marginalisation, delivery, black empowerment, rape and feminism…I
believe the work that has emerged from this cultural exchange is truly
a Trini-Cape Town experience.’
“It was a lovely experience…it was a 50/50 exchange…50
positive, 50 room for improvement… CREATE more opportunities…for
artist to advance.”
“I had a great experience. I got the space and time to experiment.
It is so difficult to quantify what I learnt. It is all a process. I will
take those lessons and move on. The memories surrounding the gatherings
with other artists, sharing their cultures, experiences together will
stick with me.”
Kate Tarratt Cross made a final appeal to local artists to consider participating
in an exchange programme in Haiti, ranging from 1-3months.” I believe
the Haitian Culture is vibrant and colourful. A Haitian-South African
collision can prove rather interesting! "
